Cook Counseling Services During COVID-19

We understand this is a very stressful time. Cook Counseling Center remains dedicated to meeting the needs of all Virginia Tech enrolled students who are in need of support.  

In an effort to protect the health and safety of our undergraduate, graduate and professional students, and staff as well as to provide mental health services to students, effective March 23, 2020, Cook Counseling Center moved to a telehealth model of care. The center is is using a secure and confidential platform for video telehealth via HIPPA-compliant Zoom. All contact, with the exception of crisis consultations, will be made via telehealth.

Appointment Information

To initiate or continue services at the Cook Counseling Center, you will need to schedule a Cook Connect appointment by calling 540-231-6557. You will be scheduled for a brief (20-30 minutes) and asked to complete paperwork prior to the appointment. During the appointment, a Connect Clinician will review your concerns as well as the paperwork, consider your goals, discuss resources and therapy options, and collaboratively develop a Connect Plan to provide you with the support you need. You will leave the appointment with a plan for moving forward.

If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call 540-231-6557 during our business hours of Monday-Thursday 8 AM – 5 PM and Friday 9 AM – 5 PM.

Mental Health Emergencies

Students experiencing a mental health emergency can access crisis mental health support by calling 540-231-6557.  During the daytime hours a member of the crisis team will first attempt to meet your needs via a telehealth format, but crisis clinicians will be available to meet with you face to face if telehealth is not sufficient. Examples of crisis that may require a face-to-face meeting are experiencing a risk of self-harm or harm to others, a recent trauma or assault, psychotic symptoms, such as hearing voices, seeing things that are not there, or disruptions to thinking that make it difficult to maintain safety. Facial coverings are required for all in-person meetings.

Psychiatry Clients

Psychiatry clinicians will contact scheduled students and will determine if a phone consultation may be appropriate rather than an in-person visit. The psychiatry nursing staff can also assist with medication refill requests. Students requesting refills should contact the nursing staff at 540-231-6557.

Other Students

All other services to the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, the Maryland-Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute will transition to telehealth sessions via phone or Zoom video. Students can email the clinicians at those sites or call 540-231-6557 to set up a consultation time.
