Treatment at Cook Counseling

Cook Counseling Center offers students many services and options to allow for a flexible, multi-faceted approach to meet emerging and varying needs. Services at Cook include group therapy, individual therapy, psychiatry, outreach, and our training program.

Therapy

Therapy at Cook Counseling Center may be provided in a group or individual setting.

Group therapy is one of our primary clinical services. For many students, group therapy is the most effective and appropriate treatment option. Therapy groups include educational, skill-building, or interpersonal-process based group sessions that allow students to hear multiple perspectives and receive encouragement and feedback from peers in a safe, supportive, and confidential environment. Groups meet weekly for 60-90 minutes. There are typically 5-12 students in each group and 1-2 group leaders.

Individual therapy involves short-term, one on one meetings with a clinician to work on specific goals. Most students are seen for individual therapy once every 2-3 weeks. Individuals seeking weekly or long term therapy may be assisted in finding outside resources.

Psychiatry

Virginia Tech students who are enrolled, have paid the student health fee, and are established in on-going counseling may seek a referral to psychiatry from their current treatment provider. Psychiatric providers do not provide care for students who only need prescriptions for ADHD medications. For this need, students will be referred to a community psychiatrist or other medical provider. If you prefer, you can transfer your ADHD care to a local provider. Please speak with your current treatment provider about how to locate a medical provider in the Blacksburg area.

Note: if students are under the care of a Cook Counseling Center psychiatric provider for other mental health concerns, your provider might, in some circumstances, prescribe medication for ADHD with proper documentation and required drug screen. If a student does receive care from a psychiatric provider at Cook, documentation of all ADHD-related assessments must be provided prior to your initial appointment. Please note that stimulant prescriptions are not provided by medical staff at Schiffert Health Center.

Comprehensive psychoeducational testing is comprised of more than one assessment or measure and includes a range of the following types of assessments:

  • intelligence,
  • achievement,
  • processing speed,
  • memory and learning,
  • attention,
  • personality assessments,
  • etc.

Cook Counseling Center does not provide comprehensive ADHD evaluations; however, a testing referral list can be provided upon request.

If you are not already in treatment with a mental health or medical provider, you can begin by scheduling an appointment with a Cook Connect Clinician.
