Worried about Self-Harm or Suicide?
If you are concerned about yourself or any Virginia Tech student being (or becoming) suicidal, please call the Cook Counseling Center at 540-231-6557 or one of the other resources listed below. The Cook Counseling Center number can be used during regular office hours or after-hours to speak with a counselor.
TimelyCare is a virtual mental health platform available to Virginia Tech students 24/7. To speak with a mental health professional in minutes, students should register at timelycare.com/virginiatech or download the TimelyCare app, login using their vt.edu email address, and select "TalkNow."
In addition to on-campus resources, for those in need of immediate mental or emotional health support, callers can now reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by dialing 988 from Virginia Tech campus phones.
Local Crisis & Support Resources:
ACCESS – NRVCS (New River Valley Community Services) Emergency Services provides emergency evaluation and crisis intervention to the New River Valley 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. A friend or family member can call for you if you feel that you are unable to do so yourself. Call 540-961-8400.
RAFT - The Raft Crisis Hotline is a program of NRVCS that offers free paraprofessional phone counseling services to the community.Volunteers provide suicide and crisis intervention, empathy and support, mental health and substance abuse information and referrals to the local communities including Virginia Tech and Radford University. Raft operates 4 p.m. – 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and 24 hours on the weekends. NRVCS Case Managers answer the phones during business hours and New Horizons, a residential crisis stabilization program, provides callers with services when volunteers are unavailable. VA COPES Warm Line
The Virginia CCP is called Virginia C.O.P.E.S. which stands for compassionate, optimistic, person-centered, empowering support. Crisis Counselors are available during the following times to take calls. Monday-Friday 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. and on Saturday-Sunday from 5-9 p.m. VA C.O.P.E.S can be reached by phone or text at 877-349-6428. Spanish speaking counselors are available.
VA C.O.P.E.S is available to all Virginia residents who may be struggling to cope with the effects and circumstances such as isolation, fear, grief and anxiety around COVID 19. VA C.O.P.E.S. counselors are prepared to refer and provide additional information for callers as well but should not be utilized as an emergency or suicide hotline.
