James Reinhard, M.D.

James Reinhard is a board-certified psychiatrist who has completed a fellowship at Harvard Medical School’s Program in Psychiatry and the Law and has additional board certification in forensic psychiatry.

He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and completed his psychiatry residency training at Dartmouth Medical School where he later joined the faculty and received an Attending of the Year award.

He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and has experience working in resident physician and medical student education, private practice, community mental health centers, Veterans Administration hospitals, and CEO of two Virginia State Hospitals (Catawba and Central State). He was appointed by two previous governors (Warner and Kaine) as Commissioner of Virginia’s public mental health system from 2002 to 2010 prior to coming to Virginia Tech.

Dr. Reinhard specializes in combining psychiatric interventions such as medications, if needed, with psychodynamic therapy in general and in particular, group therapy and interpersonal and existential therapy.  Areas of expertise include personality disorders and risk assessments for violence.
