Letter from the Training Director

Dear Prospective Psychology Intern,

The Thomas E. Cook Counseling Center at Virginia Tech is pleased to offer our doctoral internship in psychology. This internship is focused on preparation of health service psychologists for entry into general clinical practice. Our psychology intern program began in 1995 and received full accreditation from the American Psychological Association in 1997. This website serves as the training brochure, and includes information about the application process, as well as resources at Virginia Tech, and Blacksburg and the New River Valley.

This internship offers numerous opportunities for professional development in a colleagial and supportive environment. The program follows a practitioner-scholar model of training that allows interns to gain experience in direct clinical interventions including psychological assessment, crisis intervention, individual and group psychotherapy as well as supervision of trainees, outreach, applied research, and multicultural competence. Cook Counseling Center places particular emphasis on supervision of interns with opportunities for individual supervision, case conference meetings, supervision of group therapy, and supervision of supervision, as well as seminars devoted to professional development. Development of multicultural competence is integral to professional growth and practice and as such this training site strives to embody the values stated in the Counseling Psychology Model Training Values Statement Addressing Diversity.

I am hopeful that the information provided on this website will answer many of your questions and be helpful in your decision making process. Please do not hesitate to contact me at lauramiller@vt.edu if you have questions or if you would like to give feedback about our website.

Internship is a time of exciting personal and professional growth and development. I congratulate you on reaching this point in your training as a psychologist and wish you all the best in the internship process.

Very truly yours,

Dr. Laura Miller, LCP
