Joy Hottenstein, Psy.D.
Joy Hottenstein is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist at Cook Counseling Center who has a Psy.D. in clinical psychology from George Fox University. She oversees the clinical services for the Center, which entails the detail-oriented work behind the scenes to ensure students get access to resources/services and receive the best quality goal- focused treatment.
Joy’s training and clinical experiences have focused on working with young adults, mostly in university settings. She enjoys working with students with diverse backgrounds and presenting concerns through individual and group therapy.
In particular, Joy is drawn to working with shame dynamics, depression, gender specific concerns and identity, first generation college students, family of origin concerns, religion/spirituality, and grief/loss. Additionally, enjoys supervision and professional mentorship, especially with graduate trainees and early career professionals in the mental health field.
Joy is a certified practitioner of Coherence Psychotherapy. Through this mode of treatment, she helps students explore emotional beliefs/schemas that lead to repetitive patterns and feeling stuck. She uses a range of therapy approaches including emotion focused, interpersonal process, internal family systems, and relational-cultural embedded within a brief therapy model. Additionally, she has a particular interest in the use of self-compassion and mindfulness in the enhancement of emotional wellbeing.
